The Australian share market has posted modest gains in on the first day of trade after the federal election, while the Australian dollar has continued to surge ahead.

The Aussie dollar typically appreciates following federal elections. The local currency was also given a boost by strong trade data out of China and greenback weakness following the release on Friday of a weaker-than-expected US jobs report for August.
